The following information will help you do this job by yourself, with step-by-step instructions and detailed explanations of what you need to know.
How To Change Brake Fluid:
What you need to know before changing BMW brake fluid
- Gather all needed tools before beginning work on any vehicle.
- Work in a clean environment whenever possible, including wearing gloves while changing fluids since dirt can easily get into the lines and cause problems later.
- It is critical that you remember to bleed all fluid lines after changing fluids!
Let’s Start
Step 1 – Begin by raising the car from the ground, then remove all wheel covers and jacking equipment. You will want to use a jack stand for added safety while working under the vehicle. Open the hood of your vehicle and locate the master cylinder which is bolted to one side of your engine compartment.
Step 2 – Using a wrench, remove the reservoir cap and do not lose this! Now, Remove the three bolts holding the master cylinder in place using a wrench and/or socket set, then pull the master cylinder from its mount position with one hand as you continue to hold onto it with your other hand.
Step 3 – Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap, then loosen at least one bleeder screw. As you do this, notice the presence of a “bleed screw” or “bleeding port”. Further, If the bleed screw/plug has been removed, then begin drawing out old brake fluid with an empty clear plastic jar for collecting used fluid, and insert it into the bleed port.
Step 4 – After bleeding all three ports on your BMW master cylinder, then tighten these screws down firmly using your fingers or you can use a wrench instead. Now that you have bled all three bleed screws/ports, then re-install the brake fluid reservoir cap along with the master cylinder into its original position.
Step 5 – Refill your brake fluid reservoir according to manufacturer’s specifications for capacity and type of fluid being used. Using the same plastic jar that you were using for draining fluid, now draw new brake fluid into it and pour this back into your master cylinder reservoir
Step 6 – Now go ahead and tighten the cap on your master cylinder reservoir securely, then check under your vehicle once more before lowering down from jack stands and/or jacking equipment so everything looks good.
Step 7 – Lower car gently onto the ground once more, then remove jack stands (if used during this project), then raise the car back into position using the engine’s hand crank or key in the ignition to activate the jacking system if you have one.
Lastly, enjoy driving safely knowing that you have just added years of life to your vehicle’s brake and clutch system with the proper maintenance of bleeding your BMW brakes and refilling your brake fluid!
